Tetra Tech manages the Australia Awards Indonesia on behalf of the Australian Government.
The Australia Awards are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. The program aims to promote knowledge, education links and enduring ties between Australia, its neighbours and the global community and has been an important component of the Australian Government’s overseas aid program since the Colombo Plan in the 1950s. In 2023 the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), through the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, led a year-long series of events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Australian government scholarships for Indonesians.
The Australia Awards in Indonesia (AAI) entered a new phase in April 2022. The program offers a prestigious scholarship scheme to Indonesians from diverse backgrounds consisting of four award types: PhD, Masters, Split Site Masters and Short Courses. In 2023, the range of Masters scholarships offered by AAI expanded to include study at newly opening campuses of Australian universities in Indonesia.
Scholarships are complemented by a range of enrichment and linkages activities, designed to enhance the soft skills of scholars and help them realise their potential as change agents. The program is underpinned by an explicit and active focus on diversity and inclusion.
Highlights
- More than 15,000 alumni of post graduate degree scholarships and short courses.
- 75 years of Australian government scholarships to Indonesia.

Our role and impact
Tetra Tech manages the Australia Awards scholarships program in Indonesia on behalf of the Australian Government. This includes managing the initial stages: promoting the program, handling applications and selections, conducting pre-departure training and facilitating visa processing. Awardees then proceed to pursue their postgraduate studies at Australian universities. Tetra Tech also supports the Australian Embassy public diplomacy efforts in Indonesia through alumni engagement activities.
Despite substantial contextual changes, AAI remains a highly relevant and flexible tool to deepen bilateral cooperation between Australia and Indonesia in human capital development, education and workforce skills development in a post-COVID-19 era, ensuring Indonesians have the necessary skills to both enable renewed growth but also respond to future crises. This is relevant to the strategic policies of both governments, as articulated in the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and accompanying plan of action. The Indonesian Government has identified improving the quality of human capital as central to its medium-term development goals. Human capital development is also a priority of DFAT’s Covid Recovery Development Plan (CDRP) in Indonesia, which recognises that a skilled and more productive workforce is needed for sustained economic recovery and to unlock the next stage of growth’.
