Tetra Tech manages the Nauru Education Program (NEP) on behalf of the Australian Government, aiming to significantly improve the education landscape in Nauru.
The NEP, part of the broader Nauru and Tuvalu Education Support Program (NATU) initiative, seeks to transform education in Nauru through targeted interventions in primary and secondary schooling. Launched in December 2022, the program is designed to address the specific needs of Nauruan education, fostering improvements in literacy, numeracy and educational pathways, all within the context of Nauru’s complex colonial legacy and contemporary socioeconomic challenges. The program, executed with a funding pledge from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), operates with a dedicated local team, ensuring that efforts are deeply rooted in the community and aligned with national educational goals.
Highlights
- Commencement of NEP in December 2022 with a focus on inclusive, efficient and equitable education systems

Our role and impact
Tetra Tech has been at the forefront of educational development in Nauru since the commencement of the Australia Awards in Nauru, evolving into the comprehensive NEP. Our role encompasses the development and implementation of inclusive education strategies, system strengthening and fostering local leadership to achieve sustainable progress. With a focus on integrating gender equality, disability inclusion and leveraging local insights, we ensure that educational reforms are culturally relevant, broadly inclusive and aligned with Nauru’s long-term development objectives.
In its formative stage, NEP has laid the groundwork for transformative educational outcomes in Nauru. Initiatives thus far include establishing operational frameworks with the Department of Education, conducting situational analyses to inform strategy and forming the NEP Steering Group to guide program direction. Looking ahead, NEP aims to achieve four crucial outcomes: improved enrolment and attendance, enhanced learning outcomes in primary education, relevant secondary education pathways and stronger, more inclusive educational governance. Through these efforts, NEP is set to make a lasting impact on Nauru’s educational system, prioritising inclusivity, climate resilience and quality education for all.
